#NextGenLeaders Regional Winners Visit the Sky Academy Studio!
On 27th March, Leeds East Academy were crowned the first #NextGenLeaders Regional Champions in West Yorkshire. The team won over not only the judges but the whole audience with their social action project, which addresses the issue of single use plastic in their local community, whereby the accumulation of plastic bottles are currently being transformed into bird feeders with the support of elderly beneficiaries from the Seacroft Friends & Neighbours organisation. This initiative was to tackle both social isolation and mental health amongst the elderly population in Seacroft.
It was absolutely inspiring to witness each team member share their experiences of being part of such a project and how they have developed during the course of the time. As a result of them being crowned champions, they were awarded with the opportunity to attend Sky Academy Studios in London, where the students were provided with the opportunity to create their very own news report around their project topic and learn more about the new innovation Sky is currently working on. It was great to see the students engaging with the staff and learning as much as they could about the work Sky is currently part of (during their tour of Sky).
This experience supports the English curriculum, helping students to understand the elements of a great news report. The topics are cross-curricular, linking to: PSHE/Health and wellbeing; Science/Sciences; Design & Technology/Technologies; Citizenship/Social Studies. It also develops students’: Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Media Literacy, Writing (non-fiction), Decision-making.
We cannot wait to see the progress the academy makes in the next programme year & have been truly inspired by the impact they have made within their local community!
